The Gisborne skatepark buzzed with excitement and creativity as Barnardos Aotearoa, in partnership with the Violence Free Tairāwhiti Network (VFTN), announced the winners of the Āta Whakarongo (Be Heard) youth mural competition. This initiative, which aligned with Youth Week NZ (20-26 May), aimed to raise awareness about the 0800 What’s Up helpline, offering young artists a chance to express their stories and promote mental wellbeing through art.

The mural competition invited young people in Tairāwhiti aged 13 and above to submit designs that would transform the skatepark’s halfpipe into a canvas of hope and support. The winning design, created by Sammy Castano Melville (Year 10) and Benny McKinnon (Year 9) from Gisborne Boys’ High School, beautifully encapsulated the vibrant culture and positive energy of the skatepark while highlighting the crucial message of the 0800 What’s Up helpline.

“We see a lot of mental health issues with young men in our school, so initiatives like this one are pretty essential for a brighter future for these kids,” says Brett Summerlee, Art Teacher at Gisborne Boys’ High School, who supported the winning team to submit their design.

On a day filled with community spirit and joy, over 100 children, parents, and local businesses gathered at the skatepark for the announcement. Despite the rain forecast, the skies cleared, and a rainbow appeared, setting the perfect backdrop for the celebration. Attendees enjoyed a free sausage sizzle, sports games hosted by Whiti Ora, and free What’s Up merchandise, creating a lively and engaging atmosphere.

Chris Semmens, Barnardos Aotearoa Service Manager in Tairāwhiti, shared his thoughts on the initiative: "We believe in empowering young people to express themselves creatively and to seek help when needed. This competition provides a platform for rangatahi to share their stories and encourages discussions around mental wellbeing. The mural will be a lasting reminder of the support available through 0800 What’s Up."

The winning team, represented by Benny McKinnon, at the event, received a $500 prezzy card, all the necessary supplies to create their mural, and the opportunity to paint their design on the skatepark's halfpipe. Benny, a regular at the skatepark, was thrilled to see his artwork come to life in a place he frequents. "It's crazy to think I will see my artwork displayed where I hang out. I'm so excited to create something special for the skatepark," he said.

Runner-up Aaliyah Maile, who attended the event with her family, was also recognised for her vibrant and playful design. Her mural depicted a teenager performing a skateboard trick under a palm tree, with the phrase "Āta Whakarongo" prominently featured to draw attention to the What's Up phone number. Aaliyah's mother expressed her pride and gratitude for the opportunity given to her daughter.

Wendy Miller, Barnardos Aotearoa VFTN Coordinator, reflected on the day's success: "We had great community support and positive feedback about the kaupapa and mural. A huge thank you to all our local sponsors – Whiti Ora, Tom Lane from Property Brokers, Tairawhiti Adventure Trust, Iconiq Group, and Neil Go for their support."

“It was an epic afternoon, and we had a blast hanging out at the skatepark with the tamariki and rangatahi. Although there could only be one winner, I am so proud of all the rangatahi that entered. They should be really proud of themselves too," says Zara Smith, Senior Administrator and competition organiser.

This competition and event were not just about art; they were about connection, support, and giving young people a voice. By promoting the 0800 What’s Up helpline, Barnardos Aotearoa aims to ensure that young people in Tairāwhiti know they have a place to turn to in times of need.
